Eco Green Day 2020

29th Mar 2020

St. Catherine’s Nursery and Primary School

Friday 13th March

We had a great Eco Day, with lots of fun and exciting activities taking place throughout the school. All year groups took park from Nursery to Year7 and we raised £265.10 to buy Eco resources for our school.

During Green day the children and staff all dressed in their green clothes and celebrated all things Eco, everyone looked great. Many activities took place throughout the school. Families walked to school, instead of coming by car and some older children came by bike. Classes were involved in power down hours where they took part in activities such as circle time, mental maths or silent reading without the need for lights or the computer.

Some year groups took part in classes outside, making use of our school grounds to go on spring walks. The key stage 2 classes completed the Daily mile to keep healthy.

Many year groups had paper free lessons such as musical pathways, STEM and Play based learning, where lots of fun was had.

The children also tool part in waste free lunches, where they brought lunch boxes with reusable tubs, bags and bottles to reduce throw away rubbish.

Some of our Year 6 Pupils spent time today in the grounds of the Church of the Immaculate Conception where they engaged in some tree planting. They also had a talk about how trees are so important to our planet and they heard some good advice; that when one is removed it should be replaced by planting two more!

The talk was given by local man Mr Kevin Mc Crory who has 5o years experience in local landscaping and has acquired a great knowledge of nature over the years. Mr Mc Crory is at present involved in upgrading the grounds of the church as part of the ongoing Church Restoration Project. Our own Fr. Boland has a great love of trees and encourages us all to appreciate the wonderful miracle of nature all around us.
